About the Role:
Tiello has partnered with a premier Mechanical Contractor in the Bay Area specializing in high-performance commercial HVAC and energy systems. We are seeking a Department Head to lead and grow their Building Automation & Controls Division.
This is a rare opportunity for a senior-level Controls expert to own a department, lead from the front, and scale a team with full autonomy. You’ll be the one to sell it, engineer it, and make it happen - bridging technical excellence with business growth in a company that values expertise and execution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead all operations of the Controls Division from concept to completion (design, engineering, delivery, closeout)
- Develop and execute strategy to grow the department, including hiring, team leadership, and training
- Oversee project delivery and execution across multiple verticals (commercial, critical environments, healthcare, education, etc.)
- Provide technical oversight on controls system design, integration, and commissioning (Niagara, Alerton, Distech, Johnson, etc.)
- Drive customer satisfaction, project profitability, and systems performance through hands-on leadership
- Collaborate with sales, estimating, and executive teams to identify new business opportunities and win projects
- Represent the Controls Division at executive meetings and help shape long-term company strategy
Qualifications:
- 7-15+ years of experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC Controls, or Energy Systems Integration
- Proven background in technical execution and project delivery in commercial controls environments
- Strong knowledge of integration protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks), control system platforms (Niagara AX/N4, Tridium, Alerton, Distech, etc.)
- Experience leading teams, mentoring engineers/techs, and scaling department operations
- Entrepreneurial mindset with a “roll-up-your-sleeves” leadership style
- Prior experience in a Mechanical Contracting or Controls Integration firm highly preferred
