Position: BAS Design Engineer / Controls Engineer
Location: Detroit, MI
Pay Range: $80,000 – $120,000

As part of a larger HVAC technology platform, the company supports complex facilities that rely on energy-efficient mechanical systems, advanced controls, and integrated building automation solutions.
The BAS Design Engineer / Controls Engineer will play a key role in designing and developing building automation systems that support HVAC and facility control infrastructure. This position will work closely with project managers, field technicians, and installation teams to ensure systems are designed accurately, installed efficiently, and commissioned successfully.
This role is ideal for an engineering professional who understands control theory, automatic temperature controls, and building subsystems, and who enjoys translating technical concepts into clear, actionable solutions for project teams and customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and configure building automation and control systems for commercial and industrial HVAC applications
- Develop complete BAS designs in accordance with project specifications and contract documents
- Create flow diagrams, sequences of operation, network layouts, bills of material, and electrical schematics
- Prepare detailed submittals and technical documentation to clearly communicate system design and functionality
- Coordinate system drawings and equipment schedules to support project installation and execution
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field teams to ensure designs align with installation requirements
- Support commissioning activities and assist in troubleshooting system issues during project startup
- Participate in project kickoff and release meetings with field teams to align on system scope and execution
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in building automation, controls engineering, or HVAC system design
- Strong understanding of control theory, automatic temperature controls (ATC), and building automation systems (BAS)
- Knowledge of HVAC systems and building subsystems within commercial or industrial facilities
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, control schematics, and system diagrams
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for project teams and customers
Preferred Skills
- Experience designing BAS systems for commercial or mission-critical environments
- Familiarity with DDC controls, networking fundamentals, and system integration
- Exposure to BAS platforms such as Niagara (Tridium), Distech, Honeywell, or similar systems
- Experience collaborating with installation teams and supporting commissioning efforts
Physical & Work Environment Expectations
- Ability to work in active commercial and industrial project environments
- Occasional site visits to support installation coordination and system commissioning
- Ability to collaborate across engineering, field, and project management teams
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and professional communication
