Position Summary: The Vice President of Operations will lead and optimize all fabrication, shop, field erection, and project execution functions for a high-volume structural steel organization. This executive will drive safety, quality, profitability, schedule performance, and workforce productivity across multiple projects and departments.
This role is responsible for translating business strategy into operational excellence—ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in full compliance with AISC standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Lead all shop, field, and project execution operations including fabrication, erection, logistics, and QA/QC.
- Oversee project scheduling, manpower planning, production capacity, and equipment utilization.
- Ensure full compliance with AISC Certification requirements and audit readiness.
- Implement operational KPIs for productivity, cost control, safety, quality, and schedule performance.
Financial & Strategic Oversight
- Own operational P&L performance and margin protection across all projects.
- Partner with estimating and preconstruction teams to ensure accurate production assumptions and risk mitigation.
- Analyze job cost reports and production metrics to identify trends, inefficiencies, and improvement opportunities.
- Support strategic growth initiatives, new market entry, and capacity expansion.
Fabrication & Erection Excellence
- Direct shop production planning, material flow, welding, detailing coordination, and delivery sequencing.
- Oversee field erection strategy, crane planning, safety programs, and subcontractor performance.
- Resolve field and shop bottlenecks, RFIs, change orders, and constructability challenges.
People & Culture Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop shop managers, field superintendents, project managers, and department heads.
- Build a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Partner with HR on recruiting, workforce development, training, and retention strategies.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Champion company-wide safety culture and OSHA compliance.
- Enforce QA/QC programs to meet or exceed AISC and customer standards.
- Oversee internal audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in structural steel fabrication and erection.
- Proven executive or senior operations leadership (Director, VP, or GM level).
- Deep knowledge of:
- AISC certification standards
- Structural steel fabrication processes
- Field erection means and methods
- Job cost controls and production metrics
- Strong business acumen with experience managing budgets, forecasts, and margins.
- Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams across shop, field, and office environments.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.
Preferred Experience
- Experience managing multiple high-value projects simultaneously ($10M+).
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement background.
- ERP/MRP systems for steel fabrication (e.g., FabTrol, Tekla, SDS/2, Trimble, Procore).
