Tiello has partnered with a leading industrial contractor supporting some of the nation`s largest steel manufacturing operations on their search for an experienced HVAC/R Master Technician in Darlington, SC.
This is not a residential or light commercial service position. The HVAC/R Master Technician will work within a heavy industrial / steel mill environment, serving as a senior technical resource responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, and improving complex HVAC/R and mechanical systems.
The ideal candidate is an experienced technician who can independently solve difficult problems while also serving as a mentor and technical leader for other members of the team.
Position Overview
The HVAC/R Master Technician will serve as a technical expert for HVAC and refrigeration systems supporting industrial operations.
This individual will take ownership of complex diagnostics and repairs, assist with system modifications and upgrades, develop preventive maintenance strategies, and provide technical guidance to Apprentice and Journeyman Technicians.
Success in this position requires strong mechanical, electrical, controls, and refrigeration knowledge along with the ability to operate safely and independently within an active industrial facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior technical resource for industrial HVAC/R systems and equipment
- Independently diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and install HVAC/R equipment
- Troubleshoot complex mechanical, refrigeration, electrical, and controls-related issues
- Read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation
- Utilize Building Automation Systems (BAS) and controls software to diagnose equipment and system performance
- Plan and support HVAC/R system modifications, upgrades, and equipment replacements
- Develop and execute preventive maintenance programs for complex mechanical equipment
- Identify recurring equipment failures and recommend long-term corrective solutions
- Provide technical direction and hands-on support during complex repairs and equipment outages
- Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to Apprentice and Journeyman Technicians
- Clearly communicate equipment conditions, repair recommendations, and maintenance requirements to operations and leadership
- Maintain accurate service and maintenance documentation
- Ensure work complies with applicable environmental regulations, building codes, and company safety standards
- Promote continuous improvement across safety, reliability, quality, and equipment performance
Technical Experience
Qualified candidates should bring advanced knowledge across areas including:
- Industrial HVAC/R equipment
- Large-tonnage commercial and industrial HVAC systems
- Electrical troubleshooting and electrical schematics
- Digital and pneumatic controls
- Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Refrigeration systems
- Air distribution and ventilation systems
- Preventive and predictive maintenance
- Psychrometrics
- Motors, drives, sensors, relays, and associated electrical components
Required Qualifications
- EPA Universal Certification
- Strong industrial or large commercial HVAC/R service background
- Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities
- Strong understanding of electrical schematics and HVAC controls
- Ability to independently diagnose and repair complex equipment
- Ability to read blueprints, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
- Ability to successfully complete required pre-employment screening
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience within a steel mill, manufacturing plant, heavy industrial facility, or similar environment
- Chiller and large-tonnage HVAC experience
- Experience with Building Automation Systems
- Digital and pneumatic controls experience
- Previous experience mentoring or training HVAC technicians
- Industrial equipment startup and commissioning experience
- Experience developing preventive maintenance programs
Physical & Work Environment Expectations
- Work performed within an active heavy industrial / steel manufacturing environment
- Ability to safely navigate industrial facilities, mechanical spaces, rooftops, and equipment areas
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs and work at varying elevations
- Ability to lift and handle HVAC tools, equipment, and components as required
- OSHA-approved Met-Guard safety boots required; annual company allowance provided
- Strict adherence to facility and company safety procedures required
