Role Summary:
The Lead Utility Excavator Operator will play a key role in day-to-day field operations, operating heavy equipment for trenching, pipe installation, and utility work. This individual will serve as the lead operator on crew assignments, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality excavation practices while coordinating with field leadership to maintain project progress and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Operate excavators and related heavy equipment to dig trenches for underground utilities (water, sewer, storm).
- Serve as the lead operator, coordinating with foremen and field crews to meet daily goals.
- Ensure trenches are excavated to proper depth, grade, and alignment per project specifications.
- Assist with pipe laying, backfilling, and compaction as needed.
- Conduct pre-shift inspections and routine maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Promote and enforce safety standards on site at all times.
- Communicate effectively with team members and project supervision regarding site conditions and progress.
- Support and train less-experienced operators or laborers when needed.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Minimum 3+ years of experience operating heavy equipment for underground utility projects.
- Strong understanding of trenching, grading, and pipe installation practices.
- Ability to read and interpret grade stakes, plans, and project specifications.
- Proven ability to lead or direct small field crews.
- Must have reliable transportation and be able to travel to job sites throughout the Charlotte area.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in outdoor construction environments.
